Beaching payout for New Carissa

THE owner of New Carissa, the Japanese-controlled log carrier that beached in Oregon five years ago, is to pay the US federal government a net $6.5m.

Most of the money will be used to pay for the restoration of the environment in the Coos Bay area after the resulting 70,000 gallon oil spill killed 2,300 seabirds.
