The government has emphasised its commitment to getting more freight off the UK’s crowded roads and onto coastal freighters and inland waterways. So why isn’t it happening? David Osler reports

BRITAIN’S governing Labour party likes to think it is greener than its rivals, and has long stressed that it is committed to getting more freight off the roads and onto UK coastal shipping and inland waterways. That much was made clear in shipping minister Jim Fitzpatrick’s response to a parliamentary question tabled earier this year.
