You must be a Master Mariner (British Class 1). You must have sea going experience as Master preferably on bulk carriers and shore based experience in a commercial shipping company. Computer literacy preferred. You must have the right to work in the United Kingdom, the post is based in the city of London

  1. Harness the collective technical ship management expertise and experience available within BSM to develop, implement and maintain standards, policies, procedures and systems for the most efficient and effective technical operation of all vessel under BSM’s management in accordance with relevant legislation, industry best practice and quality standards while achieving or exceeding predefined performance and quality levels in technical operations and ensuring a continuous improvement of the vessels’ operational performance, safety and loss prevention record.
  2. Monitor the technical operations and performance of BSM’s full managed vessels and effectively support and guide the Technical Departments of the business units with regard to the improvement of vessels’ efficiency, reliability, environmental impact, technical performance and maintenance as well as with regard to technical solutions / innovations and compliance with new or changing legislation.
  3. Liaise and communicate with clients, charterers, vetting bodies, oil majors, flag states, port states classification societies and other stakeholders with the objective to develop and maintain an open and trustful relationship between BSM and all stakeholders and to identify and define methods to improve sustainable compliance with statutory and voluntary requirements of all stakeholders with respect to vessels’ design, operations and maintenance.
  4. Support the effective execution of internal and external audits and vetting inspections and ensure that possible deviations from predefined standards are identified timely and that corrective action is taken as required in order to ensure the vessels’ safe and efficient operations and to protect and further improve BSM’s corporate image.
  5. Evaluate and validate both new and existing methods and techniques in all areas of technical vessel operations  and ensure that the respective BSM’s standards, policies, processes and systems are continuously developed and improved and that all business units are properly supported and guided with respect to necessary changes, adjustments or harmonisations.
  6. Coach and motivate subordinates through appropriate training, development, management of performance and career progression to ensure that staff have the appropriate knowledge, skills and support to perform effectively and to contribute to the achievement of the Company’s objectives.

Director Loss Prevention Safety and Quality (LPS&Q)

Reporting to the COO

 

Job Objective

Ensure that all BSM’s business units including vessels under management operate in conformance with relevant laws and regulations as well as with the Company’s quality principles and documented management system, in order to continuously improve the Company’s performance and loss record as well as the quality of services provided and to enhance the safety culture throughout the Company.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Develop, review and upon approval promulgate the Company’s Quality, Health, Safety, Environmental and Security Policies in accordance with relevant legislation and voluntary codes and standards and ensure that these are well communicated, implemented and updated.
  2. Monitor and verify the conformance of the Company’s operations with all Policies and the documented management system. Liaise and coordinate with Heads of Business Units, LPS&Q Managers and staff in order to identify any potential deviations and to provide guidance and support for the effective implementation of corrective actions. Ensure that improvement plans are fully and properly implemented by all concerned parties, in order to increase and safeguard the level of safety and to minimize losses of any nature.
  3. Develop and disseminate analytical reports and provide proposals for the improvement of the efficiency of operations both throughout the Company and on board the vessels.
  4. Develop and implement internal audit programs to ensure conformance with relevant requirements of Vetting Organisations (e.g. SIRE, CDI, RightShip etc.) and ensure that required improvements are implemented to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.
  5. Support the timely planning and performance of external vetting inspections across BSM’s managed vessels and ensure that inspection results are maintained in the Ship Inspection Reports (SIRE) database in order to show the vessel’s capability to meet stakeholders’ standards and needs. Develop and maintain an open and trustful working relationship with Oil Major vetting department staff to be able to react effectively to set backs and to minimise commercial disruptions or reputational damage.
  6. Ensure that significant and major incidents and serious deficiencies raised as a result of Port State, Flag State or Vetting Inspections are thoroughly investigated, guide the development of root cause analysis and monitor the effective implementation of corrective actions.
  7. Coach and motivate subordinates through appropriate training, development, management of performance and career progression to ensure that staff have the appropriate knowledge, skills and support to perform effectively and to contribute to the achievement of the Company’s objectives.
