More boxship newbuilding orders needed to keep pace with demand growth

While orders for containership newbuildings are at record levels, much of the orderbook will be consumed by fleet renewal requirements and reduced service speeds

The top 10 containership operators still operate some 680 vessels aged 20 years or older, representing a capacity of 2.6m teu. Some carriers will simply need new tonnage to rejuvenate their existing fleets. Meanwhile, investment is heavily focused on large ships, which could mean a shortage of feeder tonnage is looming
