Tech leaders partner with HD Hyundai to create production platform
Siemens, Dassault Systems, Aviva, Napa, Cadmatic and others will participate in the development of the integrated system to manage all data from ship design to production on a single platform
The integrated platform to be created in 2028 is part of the shipyard’s ‘Future of Shipyard’ project, which aims to increase productivity by 30% and reduce shipbuilding time by 30% by 2030
SOUTH Korea’s HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding subsidiaries — HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Samho and HD Hyundai Mipo — have entered into joint development agreements with technology providers such as Siemens, Dassault Systems, Aviva, Napa and Cadmatic to develop an integrated design-production consolidation platform.
The integrated platform aims to consolidate the existing disparate systems used by the companies into one. These systems include computer-aided design to create detailed 3D models of ships before construction begins, product lifecycle management to monitor the entire life of the ship, and digital manufacturing to optimise the shipbuilding process.
HD Hyundai plans to be the first in the South Korean shipbuilding industry to build a digital automated production system that manages all data from ship design to production on a single platform.
“Our goal is to reduce inefficiencies caused by data disconnects in the process and innovate productivity,” the company said in a statement.
HD Hyundai will conduct initial development of the integrated platform with each of these solution providers by the end of next year, and will select one solution that is most optimised for the shipbuilding industry and begin detailed development from 2026.
The platform is expected to be completed in 2028, after a two-year development process.
According to HD Hyundai, workers at the shipbuilding site can analyse the collected data to find any errors and correct the design by using the platform. This is expected to improve ship quality and process efficiency.
The platform is linked to the shipbuilder’s Future of Shipyard project, which aims to improve productivity by 30% and reduce shipbuilding time by 30% by 2030.
The three-phase FOS has completed phase 1 of its “visible shipyard” in 2023, which allows the processing information to be checked in real time.
An HD Hyundai official told Lloyd’s List: “The development of the integrated platform is included in phase 2, ‘connected, predictive and optimised shipyard’, and also in phase 3, ‘intelligent and automated shipyard’. The platform will be essential to complete the project.”
