ONE acquires stake in Indonesia terminal to bolster Southeast Asia presence
Jakarta terminal has an annual capacity of 1.5m teu and can accommodate mega boxships
ONE also obtained five newbuildings from Seaspan’s recently signed order this summer, along with terminals on the US west coast and in Rotterdam, which were finalised last year
OCEAN Network Express has acquired a minority stake in the New Priok Container Terminal One in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The container line stated that the acquisition enhances its footprint in the regional supply chain and secures its access to terminal capacity in a pivotal region.
Situated in Jakarta, ONE’s third-largest volume port in Southeast Asia, NPCT1 features an annual capacity of 1.5m teu.
Built in 2016, the terminal can accommodate mega containerships with its deep drafts and modern equipment.
“A stake in this terminal ensures access to capacity in a key gateway and supports our growth ambitions,” said Hiroki Tsujii, global chief officer of ONE’s product and network division.
As a joint venture of Japan’s three shipping giants, ONE has been investing in its operations. Last November, ONE acquired a 51% stake in each of TraPac and Yusen Terminals and a 20% stake in Rotterdam World Gateway.
TraPac and YTI are container terminal operators and vessel stevedores that provide container terminal services in Los Angeles and Oakland, California. The two terminals have a combined capacity of 4.3m teu.
RWG operates a highly automated container terminal in the port of Rotterdam with an annual capacity of 2.6m teu.
In September, ONE purchased five newbuilding containerships from Seaspan, the New York-listed tonnage provider said in filing on Wednesday.
These five new vessels are part of an order for six 13,000 teu new boxships that Seaspan finalised in August.
