Hapag-Lloyd-owned SAAM Terminals gets San Antonio concession extension

San Antonio Terminal Internacional is a joint venture between SAAM and Seattle-based SSA Marine

SAAM said its joint venture with SSA Marine, STI, met the investment conditions agreed in 2020 and therefore the Port of San Antonio has extended its concession to the end of the decade

EMPRESA Portuaria San Antonio has extended the concession of San Antonio Terminal Internacional (STI) to operate Chile’s biggest container terminal for the rest of the decade.

The Chilean government-owned corporation said the joint venture between SSA Marine and Hapag-Lloyd-owned SAAM Terminals will now operate the terminal until January 1, 2030, having met investment conditions agreed in 2020. The existing concession was set to expire in 2025.

The agreement called for equipment, infrastructure and technology investment that would boost capacity at the terminal by 30% to 1.6m teu per year. That new capacity means San Antonio would be able to handle more teu than the new so-called megaport at Chancay, Peru.

STI general manager Andrés Albertini said this company had invested $66m in the port, “of which $47m was to extend the concession”.

“This not only lets us continue to operate the port, but also to continue delivering excellent, safe service for foreign trade, positioning San Antonio Terminal Internacional as the most efficient, most important port in Chile and one of the leading ports in the Southern Cone”.

General manager of the port of San Antonio, Ramón Castañeda, said the investment made by STI had “made the terminal and the entire logistics chain more efficient and more competitive”.

As per the 2020 agreement, STI invested in two STS cranes, two RTG cranes, 27 new reefer towers, plus 26 new terminal tractors.
