Maritime leaders recognised in UK New Year Honours
Well-known women in the UK maritime sector, Monica Kohli and Katy Ware, receive Officer of the Order of the British Empire and Member of the Order of the British Empire respectively, in the King’s 2025 New Year Honours list
Seven people in the UK, including three with the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, were recognised
KATY Ware, the UK’s former permanent representative at the International Maritime Organization, has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to maritime safety and technology.
Ware was a high-profile and well-respected contributor at the United Nations agency for nearly 14 years and has more than 25 years’ experience with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and Department for Transport.
Monica Kohli, president of the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association UK and chair of the Indian Maritime Association UK, is made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services that promoted diversity in the maritime industry.
Kohli, who is a senior lawyer with marine insurer Gard, took over the Wista UK presidency in 2020.
The King’s New Year Honours recognise people who have made achievements in public life or committed themselves to serving and helping the UK. The full list is here.
Others in the maritime sector recognised included:
- Dr Christopher Martin, the former chair of the Welsh port of Milford Haven received an OBE for his services to the maritime and port sector.
- Benjamin Simpson, the chief executive and founder of Sea-Kit International received an MBE for services to the maritime industry.
Sea-Kit International is an autonomous maritime surveillance company involved in commercial, research and maritime defence industries.
Three people within the Royal National Lifeboat Institute were also recognised:
- Patrick McLaughlin, the coxswain of the Red Bay Lifeboat Station and Trustee of the RNLI, was awarded an MBE for voluntary services to maritime safety.
- Kenneth Gee, crew person, Kirkwall Lifeboat Station, also received an MBE, for services to maritime safety and to the community at Orkney.
- David Haines, the lifeboat operations manager at Looe, Cornwall, was made a medallist of the Order of the British Empire for his services to maritime safety.
