Josephides elected to succeed Kazakos at Cyprus chamber
Veteran will take over top job at Cyprus chamber as incumbent takes the helm at the International Chamber of Shipping
New director general has been with the CSC for three decades and also serves as IMO goodwill ambassador
THE Cyprus Shipping Chamber has appointed chamber veteran Alexandros Josephides to succeed Thomas Kazakos as director general.
The choice of Josephides, who is Kazakos’ deputy as well as the body’s marine manager, was said to be unanimous.
Josephides, this year celebrating 30 years on the chamber’s staff, said he was more committed than ever “to build upon the solid foundation already in place and advance the interests of Cyprus shipping, while upholding our industry’s vital role on the global stage”.
He is a mechanical engineer and earlier in his career trained and worked as a marine surveyor for classification society Cyprus Bureau of Shipping.
Since 2015 he has also been an ‘International Maritime Organization Goodwill Maritime Ambassador’, tasked with promoting the sector to young people.
The top job at the chamber has fallen vacant because Kazakos, also in his 30th year with the institution, has been picked to succeed Guy Patten as the next secretary-general of the International Chamber of Shipping.
Kazakos’ appointment becomes effective in April but there is a handover period until Patten officially steps down in June.
The chamber was established in 1989, initially as the Cyprus Shipping Council and had 17 founding members.
It says it has a membership of about 200 shipowning, shipmanagement, chartering and shipping-related companies.
