Staying ahead of FuelEU Maritime

AMONG the regulations is FuelEU Maritime which marks a significant expansion of requirements and builds on the current EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), and Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) schemes.

This framework, effective from 2025, aims to encourage the use of onshore power supplies and motivate adoption of renewable fuels, adding complexity to emissions data management and operational efficiency for ship operators and owners.

As the maritime industry adapts to these new standards, understanding the latest regulations and adopting comprehensive compliance strategies is essential.

What is FuelEU Maritime and why do businesses need to prepare?

FuelEU Maritime is a key part of the EU's Fit for 55 package, requiring ships to track and report their greenhouse gas emissions. This new regulation goes beyond previous rules by covering a wider range of activities, including guidance on the types of fuel used and specific emission limits. Strict penalties for non-compliance are in place to encourage quick adoption of this new requirement.

For shipowners and operators, preparedness and proactivity will be key to ensuring FuelEU compliance. To do so, many are currently navigating the challenge of concurrently setting up comprehensive reporting systems, meeting different emission targets, and integrating data from various sources. So how are customers approaching this issue?

In recent years, digital technology has begun to change the way the industry operates, with data and digitalisation providing enhancements to efficiency and sustainability, improving safety, and increasing competitiveness. Advanced data management solutions are consolidating information from ships, shore, and external sources, providing a holistic view of fleet performance. These tools enable real-time monitoring and reporting of emissions data, ensuring adherence to maritime emissions regulations.

This technology is fast becoming an indispensable tool in navigating the complexities of FuelEU compliance, according to Richard Buckley, Founder and CEO of 90POE: “As maritime regulations become increasingly intricate, our customers are achieving real value through utilising OpenOcean STUDIO to comply with regulations such as FuelEU. Our platform is designed to streamline the complexities of modern emissions monitoring and regulatory compliance, and this proactive, data-driven approach not only helps customers meet regulatory demands but also yields significant benefits in terms of operational efficiency and cost savings.”

Buckley says 90POE’s platform is at the forefront of redefining maritime operations by addressing the evolving needs of emissions management. “Recognising the critical importance of accurate consumption data compliance, the platform seamlessly integrates with leading industry standards, including those of ABS, and Veracity by DNV, ensuring smooth regulatory reporting.

“Digital technology also needs to go beyond compliance, and next-generation platforms such as ours empower customers with predictive capabilities, enabling proactive monitoring and intervention to optimise operations and reduce emissions,” says Buckley.

Through the consumption of customers’ high frequency vessel data, OpenOcean STUDIO provides a comprehensive, unified, and accessible view of vessel operations and voyage execution. This data-driven approach provides for accurate emissions predictions, real-time voyage monitoring, and informed decision-making to optimise routes, weather considerations, and fuel consumption.

90POE says with advanced vessel modelling, the platform can achieve single digit error margins in consumption predictions, giving customers confidence in their emissions management position and opportunities for efficiencies in voyage execution.

Buckley finishes by saying “shipping faces a pivotal moment as FuelEU Maritime ushers in a new era of stringent emissions regulations, but by embracing digital solutions, shipowners and operators can not only ensure compliance with FuelEU Maritime but also unlock significant operational efficiencies, reduce emissions, and enhance their bottom line”.
