DFDS adds Spanish service backed by aluminium shipping contract
Copenhagen-headquartered ferry operator will deploy 2,660 lm vessel in its first direct freight service to Spain
New Rotterdam to Spanish port of Vilagarcía route is backed by a new contract from Norway-headquartered Hydro. The new service appears to be part of DFDS’ strategy to expand operations outside of its core North Sea and Baltic markets
DFDS has confirmed that it is launching a new ro-ro freight service between the Netherlands and Spain, as it seeks to expand its operations outside of its core North Sea and Baltic markets.
The new service which connects the port of Rotterdam and Villagarcia, on Spain’s north east coast, is backed by a long-term contract from Norway-headquartered aluminium producer Hydro. Capacity will also be provided for unaccompanied trailers and project cargoes from southern and central Europe.
The weekly service, which commences in May, will be operated by the 2,660 lm Belgia Seaways (IMO: 9188233). The 2000-built ship was purchased by DFDS from Dutch shipowner Wagenborg in 2019 and is currently deployed in DFDS’ Baltic services.
“This new route offers significant potential, which we believe will benefit the broader market and aligns perfectly with our focus on organic growth,” said DFDS ferry division head Mathieu Girardin.
“We are excited to establish a strong partnership with Hydro, enhancing their supply chain with improved connections to and from northern Europe and Iberia, further demonstrating that we are a relevant strategic partner for larger companies,” added Girardin.
DFDS has been undertaking significant investments in developing its service offering in areas outside of its main North Sea and Baltic routes, which have low growth potential, in recent years.
In 2023 it acquired Mediterranean ferry operator FRS Iberia/Maroc from its German owner. The company has since been re-branded under DFDS and operates three ro-paxes and three high-speed ferries between Spain and Morocco.
In November 2024 DFDS added a new service connecting Italy with Egypt, while in December it was announced that the Copenhagen-headquartered company was selected as the preferred bidder to operate a 15-year contract for Jersey to operate passenger ferry services from Jersey to the UK and France.
