Alfa Laval buys anti-fouling system maker NRG Marine
Latest acquisition by Swedish shipping tech firm adds to decarbonisation toolkit
Alfa Laval has bought UK-based NRG Marine, which makes ultrasonic anti-fouling systems for boats, as its marine division continues to grow
SWEDISH marine technology company Alfa Laval has agreed to buy NRG Marine, a Coventry-based maker of ultrasonic anti-fouling systems.
Alfa Laval said the deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2025.
NRG Marine’s AFS technology uses microscopic bubbles that implode, agitating the surface and stopping biofouling, thereby helping save fuel and cleaning costs.
“The inclusion of ultrasonic anti-fouling technology into our portfolio is another addition to our decarbonisation toolbox,” said Alfa Laval marine division president Sameer Kalra.
Kalra said this would let customers meet business and environmental aims.
NRG Marine chief executive Darren Rowlands said: “Alfa Laval’s commitment to sustainable solutions and extensive global network make them an ideal partner for us.
“This strategic move will increase our market reach and scalability, making our solution more accessible to customers.”
The deal is the latest green acquisition by Alfa Laval, which bought Norwegian weather software maker StormGeo in 2021 and Denmark’s BunkerMetric in 2022.
Alfa Laval’s marine division ended 2024 with turnover of almost SEK30bn ($2.7bn), 24% higher than its 2023 figure.
“Despite global concerns regarding the speed of the energy transition the project pipeline continues to grow at a healthy rate,” it said in its latest results.
