Dalian Shipbuilding secures breakthrough order from NYK for deck cargo newbuilds
Chinese builder has won its first order from NYK for up to four deck cargoships
DSIC says the deal marks its entry into Japan’s high-end vessel market
DALIAN Shipbuilding Industry, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corp, has won an order from Japan’s NYK Line for up to four 33,000 dwt deck cargoships.
The order, placed by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers, Japan’s sole operator of heavylift and deck cargo vessels, includes options for two additional ships. Deliveries are scheduled for 2027.
This marks DSIC first foray into the high-end vessel market in Japan, the Chinese builder said.
Financial details were not disclosed, but industry sources estimate the newbuildings will cost around $50m each, at least twice that of a handysize dry bulk carrier of the same size.
Deck cargoships are designed to transport oversized modular equipment, like offshore wind components and petrochemical modules.
The vessels will be designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute and classed by ClassNK, sailing under the Panamanian flag.
With 1.8m cgt in new orders secured in 2024, Dalian ranked eighth among the top 10 global order-winning individual shipyards, according to Clarksons’ data.
Its parent company CSSC is the world’s largest shipbuilding group, with an orderbook capturing around a fifth of the global share.
