MOL and CMB.Tech partner on world’s first ammonia-fuelled capesizes
The bulkers will be jointly owned by MOL and CMB.Tech and chartered to MOL for 12 years
The two companies will jointly own and charter two dual-fuel ammonia chemical tankers and two dual-fuel ammonia capesize bulk carriers
JAPAN-BASED Mitsui OSK Lines and Belgian company CMB.Tech will jointly own the world’s first dual-fuel ammonia capesizes and chemical tankers.
The two companies will own three 210,000 dwt newcastlemaxes, which are being built at CSSC’s Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding and are set to be delivered in 2026-27. They will be charted out to MOL for a 12-year period.
Alongside the bulkers, the two companies will jointly own two dual-fuel ammonia chemical tankers and four more which can be converted to ammonia-fuelled in the future.
The tankers are being built at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Yangzhou) and are scheduled to be delivered in 2028-29.
CMB.Tech chief executive Alexander Saverys said his company was “proud and honoured to sign this landmark agreement with MOL and MOLCT, one of the most respected shipowners in the world”.
“MOL and CMB.Tech share the same vision of decarbonising the maritime industry and the partnership for these nine vessels is a major milestone towards achieving shipping industry’s goals of net zero emissions by 2050,” he said.
