Tracking sanctioned ships is a more difficult task as vessels share critical identification numbers
- Over the past six months nearly 20 sanctioned ships have been simultaneously transmitting the same MMSI numbers of other sanctioned vessels
- Most numbers being shared relate to the fraudulent Guyana registry
- In one instance three sanctioned vessels shared one MMSI number
Vessels are using the same Maritime Mobile Service Identity numbers, a practice which can confuse the systems that ingest Automatic Identification System data
