The nomination of a retired US Navy submariner to lead the US Maritime Administration has been withdrawn, with industry veteran and USMMI president Stephen Carmel now nominated
THE White House has replaced Brent Sadler as the nominee to lead the US Maritime Administration (Marad) with US Marine Management president Stephen Carmel, according to a congressional filing on Tuesday.
Sadler, a retired US Navy submariner and senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation, was nominated in late March. He voiced his support for Carmel in a social media post on Wednesday.
“Stephen Carmel is solid — bottom line the nation needs leadership in Marad ASAP,” Sadler said on X.
“I have known Stephen for years and support him.”
US-flag operator USMMI was part of Maersk’s US subsidiary Maersk Line Limited until September 2023, when it was acquired by Jones Act owner Maritime Partners.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Carmel was a senior vice-president at Maersk Line Limited and became president of USMMI in September 2023, following the acquisition.
