Origin unknown: hundreds of voyages to Iraq may be fake

  • Nearly 400 tanker and LPG carrier voyages to the port of Khor Al Zubair in the first five months of 2025 were likely manipulated
  • 92 tankers and LPG carriers suspected of spoofing coordinates to place them in Khor Al Zubair during that period
  • Panama and Cook Islands most used flags in suspected spoofed voyages
  • Vessels suspected of spoofing were on average five years older than those that were not

Amid Ofac’s increasing scrutiny of Iran’s non-crude exports, a Lloyd’s List analysis suggests almost half of calls captured via AIS to Iraq’s Khor al Zubair port were faked, in what is likely an attempt to obfuscate the Iranian origins of oil and gas cargoes
