THE Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization has been granted consultative status at the International Maritime Organization just over a year since its inception.

Nemo was founded in March 2024 and aims to bridge regulatory gaps between the nuclear and maritime sectors, bringing together organisations such as class societies, CorePower and TerraPower.

Alongside its newly-granted consultative status, Nemo has also received a formal invitation to participate regularly in the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“This recognition marks a pivotal advancement in Nemo’s mission to promote the safe, sustainable, and responsible application of nuclear energy in maritime environments,” the organisation said.

“With this new status, Nemo will play an active role in shaping international dialogue and policy at the highest levels of maritime and nuclear governance.

“As a recognised non-governmental organisation, Nemo will contribute expert knowledge, technical input, and strategic recommendations to support the integration of nuclear technologies in shipping, offshore energy platforms, and floating nuclear power systems.”

Nemo will participate in the IAEA’s upcoming Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea initiative, which aims to develop the regulatory framework for nuclear energy at sea.

“Nemo will provide technical expertise and strategic guidance across all Atlas Implementation Groups, helping to define the future of nuclear-powered maritime solutions,” the organisation said.
