Red Sea avoidance continues to restrict recycling of aged boxships
- With resumption of Red Sea routings not expected until the first half of 2026 at the earliest, boxship recycling will remain limited this year
- Only 10 containerships with a combined capacity of 5,500 teu were sold for recycling in the first half of this year
- Higher container load factors than expected, a shortage of charter market ships and falling scrap prices have also prevented the recycling of elderly tonnage
The largest containership sold for recycling was the fire-damaged 803 teu Solong, following its collision with the medium range product tanker Stena Immaculate off the UK’s east coast
