Do the UN snapback sanctions on Iran even matter?

  • Sanctions in place before the nuclear deal will return in less than 30 days unless voted against
  • UN sanctions create wider pressure on nations to act, especially in key STS hotspots
  • But questions remain on whether the UN sanctions offer any material difference to the US sanctions already established

In less than 30 days, UN sanctions in place before the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreed in 2015 will return unless the Security Council votes against it. The question is, will this have any impact on Iran’s oil trade at all?
