To capture CO2 at sea, find more uses for it on land
- China pilot project turned CO2 from an Evergreen boxship into precipitated calcium carbonate, a filler used in plastics and paper making
- But EU ETS only recognises ‘utilisation’ of CO2 stored permanently to make building materials
- Captured CO2 must be classed as ‘hazardous cargo’ instead of ‘hazardous waste’ so it can be carried and used on land
A trial showed the process could be done safely, but highlighted roadblocks to a bigger role for onboard carbon capture and storage
