UK sanctions 70 more tankers

The UK has now targeted more oil tankers than any other country

The UK Government said the latest listing is part of efforts to build economic pressure on Russia and target its ‘illicit shadow fleet’

THE UK sanctioned 70 more tankers today as it continues to crank up the pressure on what it called Russia’s “illicit shadow fleet*”.

This latest raft means the UK has now targeted more oil tankers than any other country and that the sanctions “target the shadow fleet carrying Russian oil and key suppliers of military components”.

In the first two weeks of September, Russia intensified its missile and drone attacks over Ukraine, where some of its drones violated Nato member Poland’s air space, and hit the British Council building in Kyiv.

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said the UK “will not stand idly by as Putin continues his barbaric invasion of Ukraine” and said the invasion of Polish airspace showed Putin’s “complete disregard for sovereignty”.

Alongside these 70 vessels, the UK targeted 30 entities and individuals with sanctions, saying that they are “propping up Russia’s war machine by supplying key equipment such as electronics, chemicals and explosives used to manufacture missiles and other weapons systems”.

“International action to increase economic pressure on Russia and to cut off critical cash flows which he desperately needs to pay for this illegal war is vital,” Cooper said.

“These sanctions form the next stage in the UK’s leading efforts to ramp up economic pressure alongside our security support and our work alongside the Coalition of the Willing for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.”

The vessels sanctioned are:
