The week in newbuildings: boxships continue to dominate ordering activity

  • The containership sector provided almost 60% of all vessels ordered in the past week
  • Orders included four 8,850 teu ships for Navios, which were contracted at South Korea’s HJ Shipbuilding
  • In other sectors, Tsakos added a third VLCC at Hanwha Ocean, while Japan’s Lepta Shipping contracted two LPG tankers at a Chinese shipyard

Orders for 34 merchant vessels were recorded in the past week, with Chinese shipbuilders picking up 73% of all new ships
