US forges ahead with port fees despite Chinese protests

  • USTR hikes fee for foreign vehicle carriers to $46 per net tonne from $14 per net tonne previously
  • Exemption for voyages of 2,000 nautical miles or less will be calculated using the most distant port in a service string
  • New proposal would exempt ethane and LPG carriers ordered before April 17 that are chartered for 20 years from a Chinese owner and in service before December 31, 2027

It’s official: a final notice from the US Trade Representative on Friday confirms that port fees will begin as scheduled on October 14 and will not be delayed as part of broader US-China trade negotiations
