High number of Chinese-built ships still heading to US after port fee rollout

  • Biggest fee payers are operators of foreign-built vehicle carriers, Chinese liner operator Cosco and its subsidiary OOCL
  • Ship position data shows Chinese-built ships with port fee exemptions continue to serve US trades
  • Bulkers represent the largest share of Chinese-built ships continuing to call in the US following the introduction of fees

US port fees are highly punitive for vehicle carrier operators and Cosco boxships. Other shipping companies seem to be handling the charge fairly well
