Hellas Aphrodite crew liberated by navy
Pirates attacked the tanker yesterday morning off the Somali coast
The ship’s crew were liberated by a EU Navfor vessel after several hours in the vessel’s citadel
ALL crew aboard a Greek-controlled a product tanker boarded by pirates off the Somali coast have been liberated by a naval vessel after spending hours in the ship’s citadel.
While earlier reports had suggested the vessel’s citadel had been breached and the seafarers taken hostage, this was not the case.
Latsco Marine Management said armed forces deployed from EU Navfor assets, with the assistance of their helicopter, boarded the vessel and confirmed the safety of all crew members.
Initial reports indicate that no unauthorised persons were found on board when naval forces arrived.
“We are profoundly grateful and relieved that all 24 crew members are safe and in good health. We remain in close contact with them, and their welfare continues to be our highest priority,” the company said.
“Latsco Marine Management extends its deepest gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the emergency response, including the EU Navfor and our crew on board for their swift action, professionalism and collaboration in bringing the situation under control.
“Our immediate focus is on supporting our crew’s well-being and ensuring they receive the care and assistance they need as they recover from this distressing experience.”
On board the Malta-flagged, 49,992 dwt Hellas Aphrodite (IMO: 9722766) is a master from Montenegro and five Greek officers, while the remainder of the crew are Filipino nationals.
The tanker was carrying gasoline and bound for Durban when a pirate skiff was spotted early on Thursday morning.
As Lloyd’s List has already reported, analysts and security officials have grown concerned about resurgent Somali piracy.
The pirates managed to board the tanker despite evasive the vessel’s manoeuvres and an increase in speed.
There have been reports of attempts the pirates have made to breach the citadel but these appear to have been unsuccessful.
