Animal groups urge IMO to crack down on substandard livestock carrier fleet
- More than 35 animal rights organisations have urged the IMO to urgently strengthen global rules governing livestock carriers
- With a large proportion of ships of over 25 years old, and converted from other ship types, the fleet is particularly vulnerable to catastrophic failure
- The groups argue the absence of specific IMO standards has allowed ships with repeated safety failings to continue to operate
Without global action, the groups warn, the ageing fleet will continue to operate at ‘high risk of failure until the next inevitable disaster’
