CMA CGM and DHL Global Forwarding team up on biofuels
- Carrier and forwarder to jointly use 8,990 tonnes of second-generation biofuel
- Estimated to cut 25,000 tonnes of emissions
- CMA CGM to bunker the fuel physically; DHL to book and claim
French container line CMA CGM and German logistics firm DHL Global Forwarding agreed to use used cooking oil methyl ester, as part of products that let customers choose greener options
CMA CGM and DHL Global Forwarding will work together on offering container shipping run on biofuels.
The French container line and German logistics firm will use 8,990 tonnes of used cooking oil methyl ester, which will save about 25,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions.
CMA CGM will offer the service through its ACT+ product and DHL through GoGreen Plus, both products that let customers pay more for extra greenery.
“CMA CGM will physically bunker the biofuel across its fleet, ensuring that emission reductions correspond to DHL’s book-and-claim approach,” a statement said.
DHL Global Forwarding head of ocean freight Casper Ellerbaek said the collaboration was another milestone in their mission towards low-carbon supply chains.
“By leveraging sustainable marine fuels, we help our customers achieve their climate goals and drive real progress toward decarbonisation,” he said.
CMA CGM shipping executive vice-president Olivier Nivoix said the partnership “demonstrates how collaboration can accelerate the shift to low-carbon shipping”.
Nivoix said CMA CGM had already cut its shipping activities’ carbon intensity by 57% since 2008 and was investing heavily in alternative fuels and dual-fuel vessels.
