SCFI retreats for first time in months as frothy box market loses momentum

  • SCFI global composite declines 4%, the first pullback since April 24, but even so, spot rates remain extremely elevated
  • Shanghai-US west coast index falls 6% to $6,219 per feu; Shanghai-US east coast index dips 2% to $8,134 per feu
  • Shanghai-North Europe index declines 3% to $5,616 per feu; Shanghai-Mediterranean index declines 5% to $6,655 per feu

Container spot rates may be just taking a temporary breather, with more gains to come, or they may have hit a ceiling. What happens next hinges on how much cargo was frontloaded and how much peak-season volume is still to come
