UK-US ‘Pink Corridor’ aims to chart path for nuclear-powered container shipping
- Project partners will use a theoretical Felixstowe-Charleston service to assess port access, security, insurance, emergency response and regulatory requirements for nuclear-powered merchant ships
- Lloyd’s Register says the industry’s challenge is no longer whether a nuclear-powered commercial ship can be built, but whether it can operate within a viable framework supported by ports, regulators, governments and insurers
- The project is conceptual, with no vessel design chosen and no deployment timeline
Lloyd’s Register, Maersk and the ports of Felixstowe and Charleston will examine the regulatory, security and operational framework needed to support future nuclear-powered containership operations, looking beyond reactor technology to real-world deployment
