Relentless US demand boosts box rates to late-pandemic levels
- Drewry WCI index for Shanghai-NY rises to $9,726 per feu, highest since September 2022; Shanghai-LA index is just below Red Sea crisis high recorded in July 2024
- US containerised imports totalled 2.6m teu in August, according to Descartes, the third highest monthly total ever
- In June-August, the Port of Los Angeles’ throughput was higher than in any other three-month period in its history, including during the Covid boom
So much for the theory that US peak season would end early due to frontloading. Peak-level import volumes to US ports have persisted, pushing transpacific spot rates to fresh multi-year highs
