US trade war dents west coast agriculture exports to China

Even as US west coast container ports appear to be weathering the US-China trade war, they have warned that the spat is affecting agricultural exports. US trade tariffs intended to impede the flow of China’s exports into the US may not be working out as intended. The US tariffs on Chinese goods may have backfired because imports remain constant into US west coast ports, while the region’s agricultural exports are suffering

Portland’s trade with China over the past year has fallen by 27.9%, led by a 20.1% drop in exports to $917.4m, with wheat alone falling 30% year on year in 2019 to $437.5m
