China issues implementation plan to achieve carbon emission goal
China requires major industrial companies to take the lead in decarbonisation efforts
China will make a major push to boost green and smart ships
CHINA’s shipbuilding sector is included in a national implementation plan for industry to hit a carbon emission peak before 2030.
The plan — drawn up by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Development and Reform Commission and Ministry of Ecology and Environment — requires major industrial companies to cut their energy consumption per unit of added value by 13.5% by 2025 compared with 2020 to peak the emissions.
The overall goal of the plan is to restructure the industry, improve energy efficiency, build a series of green manufacturing factories and green industrial parks, and promote green equipment with low-carbon technology, building a solid industrial foundation for reducing carbon emission.
For the maritime sector, the government said China will make a major push to boost green and smart ships and develop more vessel equipment using green energy, including liquefied natural gas, electricity, ammonia and hydrogen.
Those plans include accelerating the development of new-generation green ships, renewing and retrofitting ships sailing on river and coastal trades, and promoting pilot projects.
China will use big data, 5G, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence to refine the manufacturing process, building a digital and green supply chain for maritime industry.
It will offer more financing for the shipbuilding industry to engage in low-carbon projects for vessel retrofit.
Beijing said it would accelerate the development of offshore wind turbines and conduct research on high-altitude wind turbines.
