The Lloyd's List Podcast: Container shipping's coronavirus cash crisis
Listen to the latest edition of Lloyd’s List’s weekly podcast — your free weekly briefing on the stories shaping shipping
This week’s podcast homes in on the container market and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The Lloyd’s List box team assess which of the major carriers are best and worst prepared, as a precursor to this month’s Lloyd’s List magazine. Joining the conversation is Sea-Intelligence’s Lars Jensen, who offers a view of what the industry may look like this time next year and beyond.
THE container shipping sector is facing a cash crisis amid the coronavirus storm.
Carriers are responding to a sharp downfall in demand with blank sailings on an unprecedented scale, which has helped keep freight rates in check.
But if the situation deteriorates or the downturn prolongs to put a recovery on hold, carriers’ bottom line will come under increasing pressure in the months to come. Some may even struggle to stay afloat.
In this week’s podcast, host Linton Nightingale, Lloyd’s List magazine editor, is joined by our container’s editor James Baker, chair of the editorial board Janet Porter, and China editor Cichen Shen to chew the fat on how the individual lines are likely to fare in the fallout of this proverbial storm.
In addition, Sea-Intelligence chief executive and partner Lars Jensen makes a welcome return to the podcast to share his thoughts on the long term impact of the pandemic, discussing the chances of another Hanjin and the prospect of further carrier consolidation.
The carrier cash crisis is the lead feature in this month's Lloyd's List magazine, which subscribers can now access and download for free.
